A Different Shade of Da Nang: A One-Day Escape to Tam Thanh

On your second trip, color outside the lines

On a first trip to Da Nang, most people follow a familiar path: Dragon Bridge, Ba Na Hills, My Khe Beach, Son Tra Peninsula, and an evening by the Han River. Those places are popular for good reason. But if you are coming back for a second time, it may be worth driving a little farther, stepping outside the usual frame, and letting Da Nang show you another color.

Tam Thanh is that kind of color!

Located south of the city, around 1.5 to 2 hours from central Da Nang, Tam Thanh is quieter than the big-name attractions. It is a coastal fishing village where the day still begins with basket boats, fresh fish, voices calling across the beach, and walls painted into murals. It smells of the sea, carries the color of street art, and moves with the slow rhythm of a community that is still very much living there.

So visit Tam Thanh as you would visit a real village, not an outdoor photo set. Walk gently, speak softly, and ask before taking close-up photos of people or private homes. The walls may be beautiful, but behind them are still people’s lives.

Here is a full but unhurried one-day itinerary for Tam Thanh: start with the beach in the early morning, walk through the mural village late in the morning, eat seafood for lunch, choose a cultural or nature stop in the afternoon, and end with sunset.

Morning: Tam Thanh Beach and returning boats

Start early if you can. Tam Thanh is at its best in the morning, before the sun gets too strong, when the beach is still quiet and round basket boats are returning after a night at sea.

Tam Thanh Beach does not feel as busy as the beaches in central Da Nang. The sand is wide, the pace is slower, and if you arrive at the right time, you may see fishermen sorting their catch right on the shore. You do not need to do much. Walk along the sand, listen to the waves, watch the round boats bobbing near the waterline, and you already have a small, honest glimpse of fishing village life.

This is also the easiest time of day for beautiful photos. But do not see everything only through your phone. Stand still for a few minutes. Morning in Tam Thanh has a kind of quiet that becomes harder to find once the sun climbs higher.

After the beach, find a simple local place nearby for breakfast. A bowl of mi Quang is a fitting way to begin filling, flavorful, and very Central Vietnamese.

Late morning: walk through Tam Thanh Mural Village

From the beach, it is only a short move to Tam Thanh Mural Village, the place that first put this area on many travelers’ maps. The murals were born from a Vietnam - Korea community art project, turning small lanes, house walls, fences, and even basket boats into an open-air gallery.

But Tam Thanh is not interesting only because it has paintings. The charm is that the art sits inside real life. A wall painted with a fishing scene may stand beside a yard where nets are drying. A child’s painted face may look onto an alley where real children are playing. A brightly colored basket boat may rest beside others that still go out to sea.

Walk slowly. Do not only hunt for the most famous photo spot and leave. Follow the smaller lanes, notice how color appears on walls, doors, fences, and boats, and let the village reveal itself little by little. Some murals are bright and fresh. Some have faded. Some corners are very photogenic, while others are ordinary in the loveliest way.

This is the “different color of Da Nang” you came south to find: not polished, not overly staged, but full of paint, sea air, and real people living inside the frame.

Noon: seafood and Tam Ky flavors

It would be a shame to come to Tam Thanh and not eat seafood. After a morning by the beach and through the village, lunch should be simple, fresh, and not too heavily dressed up.

Seafood here is best grilled, steamed, or cooked lightly, so the flavor of the sea stays clear. If you are with others, order a few dishes to share: prawns, squid, fish, clams, snails, vegetables, rice, or noodles depending on the place. It does not need to be fancy. Fresh ingredients and a breezy table are enough.

Beyond seafood, this area is also close to the flavors of Tam Ky, such as chicken rice, bun mam, banh xeo, and banh beo. If you still have room, look for mit hong, a local snack made from steamed young jackfruit, often served with grated coconut and peanuts. It sounds simple, but the nutty, creamy, slightly unusual taste is easy to remember.

After lunch, do not rush off too quickly. Midday by the coast can be hot, so this is a good time to rest, drink water, and choose your afternoon direction.

Afternoon: choose nature or history

The afternoon in Tam Thanh can go in two directions: quiet nature or deeper cultural layers. You do not need to do everything. For one day, choose one or two stops depending on whether you want to slow down or learn more.

If you want something green and gentle, head to Song Dam reed field. The area has reeds, water, lotus flowers, and small boat rides, making it a peaceful place to take photos or simply sit for a while. After a morning of sun and color, Song Dam feels like a softer pause.

If you like history, Khuong My Towers are worth a stop. These old Cham brick towers stand quietly in an open setting, not too crowded and not overly polished, but full of atmosphere. Visiting them reminds you that a Tam Thanh day is not only about beaches and murals, but also about older cultural layers of Central Vietnam.

Ky Anh Tunnels bring you into another part of local history: wartime memory in a coastal region. This stop is better for travelers who want to understand more about the area beyond the easy beauty of the landscape.

If the sun is too strong or you prefer something indoors, choose a local museum or cultural exhibition space around the Tam Ky area. It is a gentler way to let the afternoon slow down.

Sunset: stop at the Vietnamese Heroic Mother Monument

As the light softens, end the afternoon at the Vietnamese Heroic Mother Monument. The site is large, solemn, and quietly moving, especially when the light turns golden.

This is not a “light” stop in the cheerful sense, but it is worth visiting if you want the Tam Thanh trip to carry more depth. After the beach, murals, seafood, and village roads, the monument reminds you that Central Vietnam is not only beautiful, but also full of memory.

Come close to sunset if possible. The late light softens the space, brings out the lines of the monument, and makes the pause feel more natural.

Evening: return to the sea, or head back to Da Nang

If you are not in a hurry, return toward Tam Thanh Beach for a simple grilled seafood dinner, a short walk, or a few quiet minutes by the water. A day away from the city center deserves a simple ending: an outdoor table, hot food, sea breeze, and the feeling that you have seen another side of the city.

If you plan to return to Da Nang the same day, leave before it gets too late, especially if you are driving yourself. The ride back will be easier if you are still alert and not rushing.

Before you go: tips for Tam Thanh

• Give it a full day. Tam Thanh is not right next to central Da Nang, so rushing makes the trip tiring. It is best to leave early, move slowly, and return after dinner, or stay overnight if you want a very slow weekend.
• Drive yourself, hire a car, or join a day tour. If you ride a motorbike, make sure you are confident with the distance. For groups or families, a car will be more comfortable.
• Do not pack too many afternoon stops. One or two are enough. Choose Song Dam if you want peace and nature. Choose Khuong My Towers, Ky Anh Tunnels, or a local cultural site if you want history.
• Respect the village. Tam Thanh Mural Village is still home to local residents. Keep your voice low, do not enter private yards, and ask before taking close-up photos of people.
• Bring cash, water, and sun protection. This is a day of beaches, villages, and outdoor stops. Shade is not always easy to find, and card payments may not be available everywhere.
