Sitting Down with Real Vietnamese Flavor: Vietnamese Restaurants in Da Nang

If you want Vietnam on a shared table, not just a plastic stool

Da Nang’s street food does not need much defending. A bowl of mi Quang, a plate of banh xeo, or a few pork rolls at a low sidewalk table can be enough to make you remember the city for a long time. But some days, you do not want to eat quickly. You do not want to sit by the curb, and you do not want everyone ordering one separate dish and leaving right after.

Some days, you want to sit down properly, order a table of dishes to share, and eat Vietnamese food the way many Vietnamese families still do: rice, vegetables, something savory, soup, dipping sauce, and a few conversations passing between the plates.

This guide is for meals like that. It is a small round of Vietnamese restaurants in Da Nang where you can stay a little longer, moving from Northern-style family meals to Southern flavors, from warm bowls of broth to homestyle Central Vietnamese cooking. Along the way, there are a few names that have caught Michelin’s attention, but the more important thing is simpler: after the meal, you feel like you have eaten something genuinely Vietnamese and genuinely satisfying.

Warm comfort in a bowl: Thien Kim Restaurant

It makes sense to begin with something hot. Thien Kim Restaurant is a gentle starting point, leaning toward Vietnam’s soups and noodle dishes, where broth, herbs, and the steam rising from the bowl do most of the comforting.

Vietnamese noodle soups have a particular pull. It is not only about pho or bun. It is the feeling of leaning over a bowl, smelling the broth, adding herbs, chili, or lime, and somehow eating more slowly than you expected. Thien Kim sits in that warm, soothing part of Vietnamese food: easy to enjoy, easy on the body, and a good beginning before the bigger shared meals ahead.

This is not the kind of place you need to over-plan. Think of it as a soft landing: a hot bowl, a cool drink, a simple meal that still reminds you exactly where you are. Since the restaurant may appear under different listed addresses, check the current location before you go.

A glimpse of the North: Bep Que Restaurant

After a warm bowl, head north without leaving Da Nang. Bep Que Restaurant serves Northern-style homestyle food, the kind of meal that does not try to impress by being too strong. It is lighter, more restrained, and built around rice and shared dishes.

A Northern family-style meal has its own quiet charm. The savory dishes are just rich enough to go with rice, the vegetables and soup keep the table balanced, and the dipping sauce sits there as a small but essential detail. This is the kind of meal you should order as a table rather than as separate plates for each person.

Bep Que also has the advantage of a riverside setting, which gives the meal a slower pace. It is good for travelers who want to taste a part of Vietnam that does not always appear in beach-focused itineraries: not too loud, not too spicy, but very easy to settle into.

A glimpse of the South: Thìa Gỗ

From the North, the meal can move south at Thìa Gỗ, located at 53 Phan Thuc Duyen in the My An area. Here, the flavors lean more toward Saigon and the Mekong Delta: a little sweeter, generous with herbs and vegetables, and made for sharing.

The space helps the meal feel relaxed too. Thìa Gỗ feels like a small green pocket in a busy neighborhood, with two levels and outdoor seating. It works well for a slow lunch or an evening when you want Vietnamese food in a comfortable setting.

If it is your first time, order in a very Southern direction: banh xeo, lau mam, Southern-style pho, fresh spring rolls, or fried spring rolls. Each dish opens up a different part of the South: the crispness of the pancake, the deep aroma of fermented fish broth, the freshness of herbs, the soft sweetness of the soup. Put them all on the table, and you will understand why Vietnamese food is often best when shared.

A riverside house for banh xeo: Ăn Thôi

Near the river, Ăn Thôi is easy to like before you even sit down. The two-story French-style building, with its blue and yellow façade, sits close to Han Market and the Han River, making it a good stop after a walk or a morning of shopping in the city center.

The atmosphere is relaxed and polite without feeling stiff. You can come after wandering around the market, order a few Vietnamese dishes to share, and let the city slow down a little outside the windows. But if there is one dish to remember here, make it the banh xeo.

Ăn Thôi’s banh xeo comes with a golden, crisp shell, filled with pork, shrimp, squid, and vegetables, served with herbs, rice paper, and dipping sauce. It is the kind of dish that gets the whole table involved: someone reaches for herbs, someone breaks the pancake, someone rolls, someone dips. Half the fun is that nobody can eat banh xeo too seriously. A little mess, a little crunch, a little sauce on your fingers — that is part of the point.

Address: 114 Bach Dang.

A meal that feels like coming home: Bếp Hên

End with the place that most clearly feels like “going home”: Bếp Hên. Opened in 2014 and known for its retro-vintage style, the restaurant stays with people for more than just its decoration. What it really does well is recreate the feeling of a Vietnamese family meal, where everyone sits around one table, orders dishes to share, and eats at a slower pace.

Step inside and you will see old wood, reused doors, oil lamps, ceramics, and details that recall a Vietnamese home from another time. Soft music, gentle lighting, and the way the rooms are arranged make the meal feel intimate. Not like a “home” designed only for photographs, but the kind of home that makes you soften a little when the rice arrives hot.

The menu has many homestyle dishes, often leaning toward Central Vietnamese flavors and seasonal vegetables. The best way to order is as a shared meal: one savory dish, one vegetable dish, a soup, rice, and a few small plates for the table. Do not come here just to order one plate and rush through it. Bếp Hên is best when you let the meal move at its own pace.

There are two branches: “Ve Nha Co Com” at 47 Le Hong Phong, near the Han River, and “Chuyen Nang Dau” at 45 An Thuong 4, closer to the beach. If you only have time for one proper sit-down Vietnamese meal in Da Nang, a family-style meal at Bếp Hên is an easy one to love.

Want the plastic-stool version instead? Try a Da Nang roll food crawl. And if you suddenly crave Western comfort after a few days of Vietnamese meals, switch gears with a burger or pizza crawl in the city.

Before you go: tips for a proper Vietnamese meal

Book ahead during peak hours. Popular places like Thìa Gỗ, Ăn Thôi, and Bếp Hên can get busy in the evening and on weekends. A quick call or message can make the meal much smoother.

Order family-style. Vietnamese food is at its best when shared. Choose several small or medium dishes, place them in the middle of the table, and let everyone reach in.

Taste by region if you have time. Pair a Northern-style meal at Bep Que with Southern flavors at Thìa Gỗ, then let Bếp Hên bring you back to Central Vietnam. It is a delicious way to understand how different Vietnam can feel from one table to the next.

Choose by location. Ăn Thôi, Thien Kim, and the original Bếp Hên are closer to the Han River area. Thìa Gỗ and Bếp Hên’s second branch are more convenient if you are staying near the beach, My An, or An Thuong.

Bring a little cash and double-check the address. Some restaurants have more than one branch or may appear under different listings, so a quick check before leaving can save you an unnecessary ride.
